Hardcore was a no no. Sin City agreed totally. I Literally the next day my office in London rang up to say that representatives from HM Customs were there as it turned out that Sin City’s Los Angeles office had courriered over a box of hardcore screeners to London including gems such as the pregnancy porn series Ready to Drop and a number of anal gape specials. Luckily my lawyers were able to convince them that we hadn’t intentionally broken the law and they agreed not to press charges but to interview me when I got back from Cannes.

Then almost as soon as the hearing had begun, it was over. The judges stood up, possibly they bowed but if I said they did then it’s artistic license on my part, and then they were gone and we were surrounded by euro babes and marched off to a small fleet of cars outside that whisked us off to the airport. The next day at about nine o’clock I got a call telling me that the government had won and that the European Court of Human Rights had upheld the UK Government and BBFC’s decision and that my Appeal had failed.

Eventually two other adult companies, Darker Enterprises and Prime Time, picked up the cudgel and challenged the ban on R18 titles at the Video Appeals Committee and won. The only trouble was that having won at the Video Appeals Committee the BBFC ignored their ruling so they challenged the R18 ban again and again and each time the BBFC ignored the VAC’s verdict until finally a collection of hardcore films were submitted which included just about every known sex act and again the BBFC lost. The BBFC then desperately suggested that because the VAC was ruling against them that the VAC and the VAC process should be abolished.
