The Unpublished Works from 1870 to 1873 These writings can be divided into three categories: (1) texts that constitute early stages of what was to become The Birth of Tragedy; (2) the pedagogically-oriented text, “On the Future of Our Educational Institutions” (“Ueber die Zukunft unserer Bildungsanstalten”); and (3) other texts from the period of 1872 to 1873.

It is only after he became a professor at Basel in 1869 that we find evidence of a more serious consideration of Plato, Platonic philosophy, and Platonic questions in their own right and for their own sake — or, perhaps more accurately, for the sake of teaching them. He began to teach Plato at the Pädagogium during his first term in Basel, in the summer of 1869, and at the university during the winter term of 1871/1872. The other stimulus for thinking about Plato at this time was his work on The Birth of Tragedy.

Nietzsche’s friend, Paul Deussen (1845–1919) — who is the source for the anecdote about the duel — is responsible for creating one of the great Nietzsche legends: his visit to a brothel in Cologne. On Deussen’s account, Nietzsche visited the city to admire its architecture, and asked his guide to take him to a restaurant. Instead, he was taken to “a house of ill-repute” (ein übel berüchtigtes Haus). As Nietzsche reportedly told Deussen, he suddenly found himself surrounded by “half a dozen figures in jewelry and veils” (ein halbes Dutzend Erscheinungen in Flitter und Gaze), looking at him expectantly.
