But this time the boys were not interested; by taking their dare, he had lost his last claim on their interest. Ever afterwards he had a vivid remembrance of the baths, with their clammy, sour smell and the queer mingled moan, or roar, from them that seemed to follow one out into the street. The whole scene, in retrospect, became for him a parable on the theme of 'only connect'. The Baths were connected with the sea, and their contents were changed - at high tide said some of the boys, others said at low but they were not connected in our minds.
